Why try curling?

Curling is a great intersection of individual and team sports.  While there are 4 members in a team, each individual needs to develop their own skill for throwing, sweeping and possibly calling the strategy of the game.  The game can be simplified allowing participants to learn the basics quickly and start enjoying game play while at the same time providing a life long challenge for improvement.  Each position holds unique skills ranging from the type of shots being thrown to strategy or sweeping skills.  Individual strengths in any of these areas can lend towards team success.

Curling can be played by a variety of abilities and can be adapted for many conditions.  There are alternate delivery techniques (e.g. stick curling) for those that can’t bend down into the traditional position to throw a rock.  This can be used for both standard curling and wheelchair curling.  Hand signals can be used to communicate for those with hearing difficulties or sensory sensitivities.

Curling is also a sport based on mutual etiquette.  There are no referees.  Rules are enforced through self-policing with teams expected to admit to faults.  The non-offending team often decides if a rock is to be moved or removed depending on the fault.  This builds independence and maturity especially in youth.

Teams are expected to greet each other at the start of the game and congratulate each other at the end of the game by shaking hands (this can be modified as needed).

Curling may be underestimated by observers so we challenge you to come out and give it a try!
